Jon Herbert Artist Designer Sculptor
Looking for work
I am a very talented Artist living and working in Surrey England. I am very good at sculpting giftware ornaments and I am also very good at producing one off woodwork masterpieces. I love designing things so I would love to have a design job. I love drawing complex illustrations and I plan to do some more paintings with oil paint.
I have worked for 15 years as a giftware designer and sculptor for some of the top companies in the world. Making highly detailed models. I can work from drawings supplied or photographs or I can do the design work myself. I have design two successful ranges one called "Shoemakers Dream" and the other "Father Time clocks".
I have worked in the mould making department as a master mould maker. So I know all about mass production how to make giftware ornaments. I would like to work in this field again as I am very good at making highly detailed giftware models. I have been to trade fairs and promotions to promote my work and done signings in shops so I am used to meeting the public.
For two years I ran my own furniture business so I am very good at making cutting list and working out what materials to buy. I can work off plans and drawing I have always been good at making things from scratch I can turn my hand to making anything. I can use all sorts of Power Tools and all hand tools also I'm very good at doing marquetry using a sharp knife. I even had a mention in the "woodworker magazine" well one paragraph.
I was recently made redundant so I spent my time working on three children's books. One is about colour and how to mix colours. One is about time and being able to tell the time and the last one is about not saying bad words to people. Unfortunately I have to pay the bill so I had to get a mundane job so the books are on hold as the drawing take a lot of time. I bought my self an iPad Pro so that I could do the drawings I have been using Procreate program I found it easy to use.
My plans for the future is that I'm looking to find an art job again or find someone willing to back a project of mine or an advance for my books. What I need is an old fashion patron that want to buy my work off me commissions me to make masterpieces for them. I have a good track record of making products that sell. They sold 20,000 of one of my pieces. The rest of the range sold about 8000 pieces each.
I would also like to land myself a designing job as I have always loved designing things. From house designs to furniture designs to designing whole ranges of giftware models and greetings cards. So if anyone like what they see please save me from my non art job.
Other jobs I would consider doing would be sculpting for gaming company's and CGI films.
I think also toy companies need sculptors to make the first prototypes.
There are lots of illustrating job I would like to do. Design children's Jigsaws puzzle, children's books, children's magazine puzzle books.
So please get in touch if you can offer me work in any of these fields.......
Castle
This castle I made for my son. I designed and built it from scratch. I started by drawing lots of designs until I was finally satisfied with the design I actually built. I then started by erecting a base and then on top of the base I added the walls. I cut the window opening with a jigsaw and then I made the window frames. I then made the doors what I crafted from green oak this took me three days to make two doors and do the castellation around the flat roof.
Unfortunately When I was putting on the roof I fell off the castle and broke my collarbone and fractured some ribs in my back. I had seven weeks off work and I did not touch the castle for four months. From start to finish it took me one year but four month I did not touch it. I think in total it probably took just two months to make. I would be interested in make more of them if I new I could make a living out of it or someone makes me an offer I can't refuse. I have lots of other ideas for play things for the garden.
Halloween Castle
For 15 years I have been a sculptor I have worked for several giftware manufacturers here in the UK and in the USA, John Hine LTD, Robert Harrop designs, in the U K and MBI Dambery Mint Inc, in the USA. This model I had to make it hollow as it needed to light up. So I built an armature out of plastic card. This model took me four months to make as it was highly detailed and it was a very large peace standing at 300mm tall. When I started making the model it had to be tall and skinning so I could cover it with the white modelling wax I use. I was being art directed from From America, I had to ask them to let me get on with it as I knew what I was doing and I knew it would look just like the drawing they sent me. Eventually they did just let me get on with it. It took me one week to complete the base. I made a mould for making the stones. The windows were made separately I left tapered holes for them to go into. Other things that took a long time where the little figures and the top of the roof all the spaces had to be made separately. They only supplied won drawing so I had to make up the back as I went along. The other thing what took a long time was tiling the roofs and making them have holes in the roof. I think this is probably one of the best models I made for them and I liked it as well.
My Woodwork
This is some of my woodwork I have designed and built over many years. I have also done model making and product design. The clock was made out of solid mahogany and sycamore wood with ebony twelve balls. This piece took me two months to design and make. I designed the knife handle to be Ergonomic. The cassette player is made out of wood I cut a tape round and slotted it into the model. I would be interested in having a design job.
Design for a children’s play ground pirate ship
This is a design for a children's pirate ship climbing frame. I draw it all on photoshop. When I get a bigger garden I will be making this for my son. I also have lots of ideas for other climbing frames. Dragon climbing frame, watermill play house, windmill play house, train play house, plane play house, I would also love to design and build a tree house. If anyone wanted me to make this pirate ship for them or anything else I would consider doing it for the right price.
The Coin Collector with his his pet dragon
This is an illustration for a book I am writing. I have been drawing them on iPad Pro with the program Procreate. As I have not done any finished drawings for about seven years this program I found very easy to use because if you make a mistake you can always fix it. Also I need to wear glasses now so it is very useful to be able to zoom in and out on the drawing.
children’s Wardrobe
This is a design for children's wardrobe. I draw it up using photoshop and importing real photos of wood. I would love to do a design book to show how to make this and other things like this.
